Apple hires former Fiat Chrysler VP, possibly for a mysterious car project

The Apple car rumor mill is fired up once again.

Doug Betts, a former VP of quality for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), has been hired by Apple to join its mysterious car development program, according to The Wall Street Journal. This is the latest in a long series of hires Apple has made for this project.

No one knows for sure what Apple is planning with its car project, although some argue it may make sense for the company to build a car of its own — others, of course, say the move would be unlikely.

Apple has made many hires from the automotive industry in the past few months. In February, a report surfaced that Apple has a team of 1,000 staffers (including people who were hired away from Tesla, Ford and Mercedes-Benz) working on a car project codenamed “Project Titan.” Apple was even sued by automotive battery manufacturer A123 Systems for poaching employees.
